George, this guide is for you. Cal owns the shop; you are performing the accumulator replacement. Start with the scanner check below, then follow the original repair stages. Before disassembly, verify every required routine on this exact van and obtain the current OEM torque and safety prerequisites.
Evidence note: The original guide’s confidence percentages are author estimates, not manufacturer guarantees. Prices are dated October 6, 2026. Manufacturer vehicle coverage does not prove that your exact scanner/software exposes every required M40 routine. Current VIN-specific OEM service information controls.
What the percentages mean: confidence in the accuracy/support for that statement, not a prediction that the repair will succeed. Ram/Mopar and official tool-manufacturer documentation generally score 95–99%. The main remaining uncertainty is whether AlfaOBD exposes every required M40 routine on this exact ProMaster ECU; verify that before disassembly.
HIGH-PRESSURE HYDRAULICS: Do not loosen the accumulator to release pressure. Chrysler service information calls for scan-tool-driven Hydraulic Circuit Depressurization before hydraulic components are removed.

2. Prove the scan tool can finish the job before disassembly
Step 1
99% George, Fully charge/support the battery. Park securely, set parking brake, chock wheels, engine OFF while establishing communication.
Step 2
99% George, Plug the yellow Adapter 3-style CAN cable into the DLC, then the OBDLink LX into the adapter. Pair LX to Android by Bluetooth.
Step 3
99% George, Open the paid/full AlfaOBD app and configure OBDLink LX.
Step 4
90% George, use the scanner manufacturer’s documented vehicle and ECU selection to identify this 2014 Ram ProMaster M40/MTA controller. An exact AlfaOBD menu path has not been verified here. Confirm the controller identity on this van; do not force an ECU profile if AlfaOBD does not positively identify it.
Step 5
99% George, Read and save/photograph all TCM fault codes before clearing anything.
Step 6
99% George, STOP AND VERIFY FUNCTIONS. Confirm access to a routine clearly equivalent to
Hydraulic Circuit Depressurization / accumulator depressurization.Step 7
99% George, Confirm access to
Reset of Data Group, Quick Learn, and Bleed Hydraulic Circuit if needed.Critical distinction: The historical manufacturer coverage document lists these functions for 2014+ ProMaster; verify this exact M40 controller and scanner version. Snap-on's official coverage guide explicitly lists Quick Learn, New Actuators, Hydraulic Circuit Depressurization, Learn Clutches Contact Point, and Reset of Data Group. Public AlfaOBD documentation does not list every active routine per exact ProMaster ECU, so AlfaOBD-specific completion remains 80% until verified on this van or confirmed by AlfaOBD support.
| Scanner statement | Confidence |
|---|---|
| 2014+ ProMaster has the named M40 special functions | 99% |
| AlfaOBD supports 2014–2021 ProMaster with OBDLink LX + yellow adapter | 99% |
| AlfaOBD supports the Marelli CFC348 Selespeed controller family | 98% |
| AlfaOBD exposes all required M40 routines on this exact van | 80% pending verification |

3. Depressurize the hydraulic circuit
Step 8
99% George, Vehicle stationary, engine OFF. Run Hydraulic Circuit Depressurization with the scan tool and follow every on-screen prerequisite exactly.
Step 9
98% George, Wait for successful completion and verify the current OEM criteria for safe pressure release. If pressure live data is available, use it as additional confirmation against those OEM criteria. A reading merely below the normal operating range does not establish that the circuit is safe to open.
Step 10
99% George, Turn ignition OFF after the routine.
Step 11
99% George, Disconnect/disable the Selespeed/MTA pump electrical connection before opening the hydraulic system.
Never crack the accumulator loose to depressurize it. Scan-tool depressurization first, ignition off, pump disabled, then service.
Factory-service evidence: 2014 ProMaster M40 diagnostic procedure mirror.
4. Replace the accumulator
Step 12
98% George, Clean the accumulator/control-unit area before opening the circuit.
Step 13
98% George, Place catch pan/absorbent material below. Confirm the pump remains disabled.
Step 14
95% George, Remove the failed accumulator with the correct tool. Expect some residual fluid even after safe pressure release.
Step 15
99% George, Confirm correct replacement. The original guide identifies 68133085AA, replacing 68226975AA; confirm current part, seal and VIN fitment with Mopar before ordering or installation.
Step 16
98% George, Install the correct replacement seal/O-ring supplied or specified for the accumulator.
Step 17
70% George, Tighten to the current verified OEM torque specification. This guide intentionally does not print a torque number because a sufficiently trustworthy exact value has not been verified. Do not guess.
Part evidence: Official Mopar accumulator 68133085AA.
5. Correct MTA hydraulic fluid
Step 18
99% George, M40/MTA control-system hydraulic circuit uses MOPAR C Series DDCT SAE 75W Hydraulic Fluid or equivalent.
Step 19
99% George, Do not put DOT 4 in the MTA control-system reservoir. DOT 4 is for the separate hydraulic clutch operating system.
Step 20
98% George, With pressure released, inspect the MTA control-unit fluid level and bring it to the factory sight-window level; service information describes filling to the middle of the sight window.
Step 21
95% George, Have at least one quart of correct fluid on hand for accumulator service/top-off. This is not presented as a verified full dry-fill capacity for the complete hydraulic unit.
Official Ram proof: 2014 Ram ProMaster Diesel Supplement — gearbox = 75W-85 GL-4; control system = C Series DDCT SAE 75W hydraulic fluid; clutch hydraulic system = DOT 4.
Mopar chemical catalog: C Series DDCT SAE 75W Hydraulic Fluid.
Mopar chemical catalog: C Series DDCT SAE 75W Hydraulic Fluid.
6. Reconnect and repressurize
Step 22
98% George, Verify accumulator secure and fluid level correct. Reconnect MTA/Selespeed pump.
Step 23
95% George, Turn ignition ON as directed by the scan tool/factory workflow and allow the pump to build pressure.
Step 24
98% George, Inspect the accumulator and hydraulic assembly immediately for leaks.
Step 25
95% George, If pressure PID is available, verify pressure builds and holds. M40 technical documentation describes normal regulation around 522–667 psi (36–46 bar), though transient pressure can be higher.
Technical corroboration: GEARS M40MTA technical overview.
7. Bleed and relearn
Step 26
99% George, If the hydraulic circuit was exposed to atmosphere, perform Bleed Hydraulic Circuit using a scan tool that supports the M40 routine.
Step 27
99% George, For accumulator replacement, factory relearn information calls for Reset of Data Group.
Step 28
98% George, Factory information also states Quick Learn must follow Reset of Data Group. Follow current scan-tool prompts.
Step 29
98% George, Do not run
New Actuators or Learn Clutches Contact Point unless required for components actually replaced or specifically instructed by OEM workflow.Factory relearn evidence: 2014 ProMaster M40 component relearn procedures.
8. Final verification
Step 30
98% George, Read TCM codes after procedures. Clear only appropriate repair-related faults.
Step 31
98% George, Cycle ignition as instructed. Confirm pump does not cycle excessively and system holds pressure normally.
Step 32
98% George, With brakes applied and vehicle stationary, verify Reverse and forward selection.
Step 33
98% George, Cautious road test: verify clutch engagement, shifts, and no transmission warning.
Step 34
98% George, Recheck accumulator/control unit for leaks and rescan TCM after road test.

Fallback if AlfaOBD does not expose the required M40 routines: stop before disassembly. Use a scan tool with verified ProMaster M40 coverage. Snap-on’s 18.4 coverage document lists these functions for 2014+ ProMaster; confirm the exact tool model and installed software on this van; Chrysler/Ram wiTECH is the OEM-level alternative. I have not found equally explicit public coverage proof for a specific inexpensive Autel or TOPDON model, so this guide does not claim they will perform these exact M40 routines.
10. Source hierarchy
George, obtain current VIN-specific procedures from the Stellantis Service Library. Official wiTECH service-information access instructions. Mirrored service text and a historical coverage guide are supporting references; they do not verify current OEM torque or your scanner’s exact menus.
